The First Tee of the Upstate Golf Challenge

Saturday, December 16th, 2017 Green valley country club 2PM Shotgun Start

The Third Annual Golf Challenge was a huge success! Just like the first we were blessed with fantastic weather for December. This year we had a record number (44) of donors and The First Tee of the Upstate Participants play in the event. Participants from Program Locations like Carolina Club at Botany Woods, Carolina Springs, Legacy Pines, Willow Creek and Woodfin Ridge teamed up with donors from all three of the counties that we service (Cherokee, Greenville and Spartanburg). Russ Calicutt and Rick Cobb, two supporters, recall the best way to finish their round. They came up to the Par 3 8th hole at Green Valley Country Club (their last of the day) needing a birdie to put pressure on the lead group. Russ recalls what happened next, "Logan Neal, our participant from Woodfin Golf Club hit a wonderful shot on #8, all the way to the top tier of the back of the green. What made the shot even better was that all three adults before him had completely missed the green.  He then stood over a 20 - 25 footer and made the putt.  His putt never left the hole, and was reminiscent of his favorite golfer, Ricky Fowler.  It was a great way to finish the round with Logan making his own birdie and in front of his mother!" The team that took home the hardware in 2017 was made up of the Event Chair and Board Member, Scott Ferrell, Board Member, Charles Warren, Supporter, Matt Grady and The First Tee of the Upstate Alum, Grace Vaughan, who shot an impressive -8 par (28) on the front nine at Green Valley Country Club. After the event, all of our players got to hear from Grace Vaughan and what her experience with The First Tee has meant to her. She talked about how she continues to use the Life Skills that The First Tee taught her on and off the golf course. The event will raise over $20,000 for the chapter, which will help to start a new Program Location in 2018, it will help to offset the costs of sending new coaches to national trainings and equipment for our partnership with all three counties school districts. However, the fundraising is not over, players will continue to fundraise throughout the year, so if you are interested in supporting this event, please click on the link below the pictures from the event. Again, thank you to all that made this a very successful Golf Challenge!
